Bilbao vessel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bilbao vessel is the handle of a Spanish military sword that was in use until the 19th century. The vessel consists of the following handle elements:

  1. Handle bar
  2. vertically moving quillons
  3. front and rear guard
  4. an oval, strongly curved guard plate , obliquely to the longitudinal axis up to the height of the guard
  5. Handle fully wrapped with wire
  6. four attached longitudinal bars on the handle above the handle winding
  7. Vessel mark with "Bilbao" (probably the place of manufacture)

This weapon was also called "Bilbo" or "Bilbawe" because of this marking.
