The Binnig and Rohrer Nanotechnology Center (BRNC) in Rüschlikon ZH is a research center for nanotechnology of the company IBM .
It was named after the two nanotechnology pioneers and Nobel Prize winners Gerd Binnig and Heinrich Rohrer , who developed the scanning tunneling microscope in 1986 at the neighboring IBM Zurich Research Laboratory . The Binnig and Rohrer Nanotechnology Center specializes in basic research in materials science and nanotechnology.
Noise Free Labs
Especially at the research facility, the novel are noise-free labs (Engl. Trouble-free laboratory ). They protect the experiments from sound waves, floor vibrations, UV radiation, magnetic fields and temperature fluctuations, which would influence or even destroy the results. The experiments and the associated devices are located in protected rooms, which correspond to ISO standard 5 class 100, and are remote-controlled.
