Biocity Münster
The Biocity Munster is a wildlife conservation center in Allwetterzoo in Westphalian Münster . Since it opened on July 5, 2005, it has been located in the entrance area of the zoo and has combined a protection center for turtles, a research workshop for schoolchildren and an exhibition on biodiversity . The carrier of the Biocity is the Westphalian Society for Species Protection eV
Protection center
The International Center for Turtle Conservation (IZS) is located in the Biocity . It has set itself the task of protecting highly endangered turtles, especially from the Asian region, from extinction. It was established on October 18, 2003 through cooperation with the Zoological Society for Species and Populations Protection. V. and the German Society for Herpetology and Terrarium Science . This worldwide unique pilot project is supported by numerous donations from Germany and abroad. The IZS pursues the following essential goals:
- Ensuring the long-term survival of the turtles through their own breeding station and thus maintaining a stable population
- Protection of the natural habitats of animals
- Collection of biological knowledge about the species kept
- Public outreach to inform about the threat to the turtles
Research workshop
The research workshop is a facility specially designed for students. The aim of the research workshop is to offer children and young people an opportunity to deal extensively with the subject of biodiversity. As a result, a modern knowledge and media center was created. Pupils can carry out experiments independently or in a group, and write presentations and technical papers there. Specialists are available to answer any questions. At the same time, the research workshop offers all visitors an open forum for lectures, events and discussions on the subject of species protection and biodiversity .
exhibition
The third important part of the Biocity is dedicated to the exhibition itself and the topic of the conservation of biodiversity. It shows the importance of biological diversity as the basis of all life and at the same time shows its acute threats. The areas of biodiversity, bionics , species protection measures and the role of vital water should be brought closer to interested visitors by means of attractive visual impressions . The exhibition goes beyond the space of the Biocity by including the landscape and architecture of the zoo. There is also the possibility to see the room with the turtles through a window.
history
Since 2002 the place of the flamingos at the zoo entrance has been converted into a Bio (diver) city. In the meantime there was an exhibition about the rainforest in the shell. The office is in a former apartment of a zoo employee. The background was the donation of several Chinese turtles from Nottulner Meier. Since the zoo is involved in several conservation projects in Southeast Asia, the conservation center for turtles was built.
