Biology laboratory assistants prepare studies on animals, plants, microorganisms and cell cultures and carry them out according to the instructions of scientists . They observe and control test procedures and evaluate the results.

Biology laboratory assistants work in medical and biological research, applied medicine, and public health. In industry, for example, they are employed by pharmaceutical and cosmetics manufacturers, by food manufacturers and in companies that manufacture biotechnical products. They can also work in hospitals.

Training as a biology laboratory assistant

The apprenticeship as a biology laboratory technician is usually a dual training that takes place in the training company and in the vocational school (school-based training is also offered). The training to become a laboratory technician usually lasts 3.5 years and can be shortened to three years with good performance.

A middle school leaving certificate is required for the training. A good knowledge of biology and chemistry are of course essential, as are knowledge of the related natural sciences, physics, and good knowledge of mathematics, especially for evaluating measurement results. In addition, a special interest in experimental, especially animal work, care and a sense of responsibility as well as a good imagination are important for the profession of biology laboratory assistant.
