Bionator
The Bionator is a removable device used in orthodontics that is supposed to change the bite position or induce an increase in the bite. It belongs to the group of functional orthodontic devices, which also includes the activator and the functional regulator. The transitions between these devices are partially fluid, all of which are made up of plastic sheets and wire elements.
The special thing about the Bionator is that it acts equally on both jaws, but without letting great forces act. On the contrary, your own muscle strength is used. With every act of swallowing and also when speaking, muscle strength is used to gradually regulate the tooth support system. The Bionator stretches the muscles in the jaw, these are trained and the bite is normalized over time.
The Bionator is mostly used by children and adolescents to ensure that a functional jaw is maintained during development. In addition, functional orthodontic devices are generally most effective during the growth phase.
History and Development
The Bionator was developed in 1952 by Balters , who described the device as his life's work. For Balters, the holistic approach was in the foreground; according to him, wearing should bring “inworld, environment and fellow world” back into harmony. In addition to the Bionator, posture exercises, correct nasal breathing, secure mouth closure and correct tongue position should also be carried out.
Construction and mode of operation
The removable device lies loosely in the mouth. It consists of a delicate plastic plate, more delicate than the activator. It only takes up the space on the posterior teeth and the lower front teeth, the rest is free. There is also a wire frame with tongue clip, lip clip and two buccinator loops for the cheek muscles. It acts simultaneously on both jaws , whereby jaw misalignments can be corrected in the same way as tooth misalignments . At the same time, the facial area is also designed; aesthetic improvements can also be achieved there by normalizing the jaw.
criticism
The effects and benefits of the bionator are controversial. In particular, there is a lack of double-blind studies .
"Today there is no longer any meaningful indication for the use of the Bionator in orthodontics, as more powerful and reliable braces are available for all treatment tasks."
According to studies by the Universities of Florida and North Carolina in the 1990s, the Bionator extends the entire treatment period and makes it more expensive.
