Organic pig farming

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Under pig husbandry refers to the pig farms in organic farming of certain under regulatory compliance.

Regulations

Organic pig farming has to follow certain EU legislation . A lot of daylight is required for keeping the animals; Basic requirements are also an outlet and natural ventilation. It is prohibited to tethering . Half of the floor area may consist of slatted floor ; a dry and littered surface is also required. Pregnant and empty sows must be kept in groups. The size of farrowing pens must not be less than 7.5 square meters. For piglets neither cages nor are flat decks or docking and teeth clipping permitted. The EU stipulates the minimum suckling time of 40 days.

Practical organic pig farming

Some of the regulations result in higher costs, which is why the higher number (up to 40 percent) of productive sows allows group suckling. In addition to the keeping, the feeding, which must come from organic production, is important. Up until the end of 2017, fatteners are allowed to buy conventional, GMO-free protein feed components if they otherwise comply with EU legislation on organic farming. The addition of these components can reach a maximum of five percent of the feed. Organic pigs have only been defined as such since August 2003 if they have been kept organically in the manner described for at least six months. For this reason, only piglets from organic sows are eligible for fattening. If conventional sows are bought in, they must then be kept organic.

distribution

In contrast to conventional pig production, organic pig production in Switzerland recorded strong growth; In 2018, three percent of the pig population was kept according to biological criteria. This trend continued in 2019.
