Birbeck granule

Birbeck granules of various shapes

A Birbeck granule (synonym Birbeck body , plural Birbeck granula ) is a cell organelle that is typical of Langerhans cells .

properties

Birbeck granules are rod-shaped, sometimes tennis racket-shaped, striped structures in the cytosol . They are a typical microscopic finding in Langerhans cell histiocytosis ( histiocytosis X ). Birbeck granules are made up of the antiviral protein Langerin (synonym CD207). After HIV-1 binds to Langerin, the bound virion is stored in the Birbeck granulum and broken down.

history

Birbeck granules were first described in 1961 by Michael Stanley Clive Birbeck .
