Langerin (synonym CD207 , C-type lectin domain family 4 member K ) is a protein in Langerhans cells .

properties

Langerin is a type II transmembrane protein and a C-type lectin . In addition to Langerhans cells Langerin is also of CD103 -positive dendritic cells of the skin and CD8 -positive dendritic cells of the spleen expressed . Langerin is localized intracellularly in Birbeck granules and initiates their formation. As a lectin, Langerin binds mannose . Presumably, by binding mannose, Langerin serves as a resistance factor for the immune system , e.g. B. in HIV -1, mycobacteria and Candida . While Langerin inhibits infection of dendritic cells with HIV-1 through the skin, the C-type lectin DC-SIGN leads to an intensification of the infection.
