Birhan Woldu

Birhan Woldu (* around 1981) is an Ethiopian who, shown in a video by the Canadian journalist Brian Stewart at the Live Aid concert in 1985 as a child near death from hunger , as “the face of hunger” of Famine ") became known.

In 2004, she appeared as an adult in the music video for Band Aid 20's version of Do They Know It's Christmas . In 2005, Bob Geldof showed Brian Stewart's film again at the Live Aid concert in London . He then asked Birhan Woldu to take the stage, who thanked the audience in her mother tongue for the support of the audience. She stayed on stage for the first part of Madonna's subsequent appearance ( Like a prayer ).

Her mother and sister died during the famine between 1984 and 1985 in northern Ethiopia . Birhan Woldu and her father Ato Woldu survived. Her father and nurses nursed her back when, contrary to all expectations, she showed a strong will to live. Brian Stewart then sponsored her schooling. She studied at an agricultural academy that receives financial support from the African Children's Education Trust .
