Birkenbog House

Birkenbog House is a residential building near the Scottish village of Fordyce in the Council Area of Aberdeenshire . In 1972 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

Probably between 1730 and 1740 the seat of the Abercrombie of Birkenbog family was built on the site . The date 1693 with the Abercrombies family crest most likely comes from the predecessor of the nearby Glassaugh House . After a fire in 1790, the demolition of the building is documented. Today's Birkenbog House was probably built a short time later, with fragments of the older building being integrated. After the family inherited a larger property in 1803, there was no need to expand Birkenbog any further.

description

Birkenbog House is isolated around two kilometers northwest of Fordyce and 1.5 km south of the south bank of the Moray Firth . The main facade of the two-story building is five axes wide. Its quarry stone masonry is plastered with Harl . Above the central, two-winged entrance door with a simple cornice , a coat of arms is embedded. The rear facade of Birkenbog House is asymmetrical. The round tower protruding from the south-east edge, which presumably originates from the previous structure, is striking. A later, two-story kitchen wing continues on the north side. The roofs are covered with slate.
