history
The original was created by Georg Meyer-Steglitz in 1905 and was lost in World War II . The new statue was financed by donations from citizens. The money for the portrait was the CDU councilman and Drehorgelspieler collected August Dresenz. For this purpose, the committed Wilhelmshaven resident founded the August Desenz barrel organ foundation with the purpose of preserving local history and monuments as well as local history exclusively in the Wilhelmshaven-Friesland area. This raised 45,000 euros. It was designed by the Saint Petersburg- born artist Sergej Musat , whose design was based on the monument that was lost during World War II. The artist paid tribute to the work during the inauguration ceremony:
"Bismarck was a great German"
The group of the Greens distributed green Bismarck herrings during the inauguration ceremony. Critics accused the memorial and the project of being a piece of real satire.
