Johan Niclas Cahman

Johan Niclas Cahman (* around 1670 in Flensburg ; † June 18, 1737 ) was a Swedish organ builder . He was a member of the Swedish organ builder family Cahman . He was the son of the organ builder Hans Henric Cahman .

life and work

Johan Niclas Cahman was born in Flensburg in the 1670s. His father Hans Henric Cahman learned organ building as a journeyman from Hans Christoph Fritzsche , the son of the well-known organ builder Gottfried Fritzsche , in Hamburg. Johan Niclas Cahman was trained by his father in the north German organ building tradition. In 1685 the family moved to Landskrona and in 1688 to Växjö in Sweden.

After the death of his father Hans Henric Cahman in 1699, Johan Niclas Cahman and his brother Johann Herrmann Cahman finished the organs of the St. Jakobs and Riddarholms churches that Hans Henric had started in Stockholm . In 1700 he moved to Västerås and built the cathedral organ there. In addition to numerous other organ works, he built the organ for the cathedral church of Upsala with 40 registers. The organ that his father had built there fell victim to a fire in 1702.
