Lake Bito is a lake on Leyte Island in the Philippines . It is located about 7 km northwest of Abuyog in the province of Leyte . The lake covers an area of around 1.26 km² not far from the Gulf of Leyte ; its outflow flows into the Bito , which flows into the Gulf in Abuyog. The German explorer Fedor Jagor visited Lake Bito on his trip to the Philippines in the 19th century.
The finely structured alga Cladophora sp. and the water spinach ( Ipomoea aquatica ) are dominant species of aquatic vegetation. Rice is grown in the areas surrounding the lake and some larger plantations with coconut palms and other fruit trees have been created.
The lake, with an average depth of 15 meters, has a large fish population with the following fish species: the milkfish ( Chanos chanos ), predatory catfish ( Clarias sp. ), Tilapia and the goby Glossogobius giurus . The lake also has a large population of various water birds .
