Bjorn Estridsson

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Björn Estridsson (also: Beorn or Bjørn Estrithson ; † 1049 in Dartmouth , murdered) was a son of Ulf Jarl and Estrid Svendsdatter , sister of Canute the Great .

Life

Björn settled in England, where many of his relatives held high positions. He himself ruled an earldom in what is now the East Midlands .

In 1047 Bjorn's cousin Sweyn Godwinson fled England. Together with Harold Godwinson , he benefited from Sweyn's absence when he was awarded part of his property.

When Sweyn returned to England and tried to get a pardon from the king, Bjorn and Harold refused to give the land back. With three other Björn was from Sweyn to Bosham ( West Sussex lured), where he was captured. He was taken to Dartmouth by ship, where he was killed and his body buried. Harold Godwinson later had Björn buried next to his uncle Canute the Great in the Old Minister, Winchester .

Beorn could have had a son. Morkinskinna mentions an Åsmund, nephew of Sweyn Estridsson, who is explicitly referred to as the son of Björn, the king's brother. The Harald Hardrådes saga , part of the Heimskringla , names the same Åsmund as the son of Sweyn's sister.
