The Black Mages was a band led by Japanese video game music composer Nobuo Uematsu . Their style can essentially be described as instrumental melodic metal with extensive keyboard parts.

Uematsu reworked some of his favorite background and especially fighting pieces from the Final Fantasy games, so that they were redesigned on the albums The Black Mages (2003), The Black Mages II - The Skies Above (2004) and The Black Mages III - Darkness and Starlight (March 19, 2008) were released. The first album was a great success and sold around 40,000 times. Stylistically, the synthesizers take a back seat to the stronger electric guitars on the second album , which makes the music seem harder here. Nobuo Uematsu resigned from Square Enix to pursue his solo projects. The albums have so far only been released in Japan, but are also available in Germany and the USA via online music platforms. On August 7, 2010, Nobuo Uematsu announced that the band had split up; but he would continue to rearrange his music with his new band Earthbound Papas in rock style.
