Black Star Square (also: Independence Square ) is a square in Accra , Ghana near the Accra Sports Stadium and the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum (Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park).

history

Kwame Nkrumah commissioned the design of the square in honor of Queen Elizabeth II's visit . Construction work continued until 1961.

meaning

Black Star Square hosts Ghana's Independence Day Parade on March 6th each year. It also hosts all of the major national public gatherings and national festivals.

Attractions

At the edge of the square there are grandstands with space for 30,000 people. Two special monuments determine the view of the square: the Independence Arch and the Black Star Monument (Black Star Gate). A statue of a soldier facing the Independence Arch symbolizes the Ghanaians who lost their lives in the struggle for Ghana's independence.
