Independence Arch in Accra

The Independence Arch is a triumphal arch in Accra , the capital of Ghana . It was established in honor of the country's independence in 1957. Ghana was the first independent state in Black Africa, which means the Independence Arch also stands for the beginning of the decolonization of Black Africa.

The arch is located on Independence Square in the Victoriaborg district . On the Independence Arch there are four huge black stars that are aligned in the four cardinal directions. There seems to be only one star from each of the four directions. The black star as the “guiding star of African freedom” can also be found on the flag of Ghana . Below the star is the writing AD 1957 (AD = Anno Domini = in the year of the gentleman ) to commemorate the year of independence and underneath another inscription with the motto of the state of Ghana: Freedom and Justice .

The arch has references to Eero Saarinen's Jefferson National Expansion Memorial in St. Louis.
