Ankachutjan Hraparak

Ankachutjan Hraparak ( Armenian Անկախության Հրապարակ , also: Ankakhutyan Hraparak , German: Independence Square ) is a large square in the center of Gyumri , Armenia . It is the second largest square in the city after the Vartanants Hraparak . The square is divided by Khrimian Hayrik , Garegin Nzhdeh , Alex Manoogian , Sayat Nova Avenue and Tigranes Avenue . It measures 125 × 125 meters (15,625 m²) and was created in the 1940s, after the Second World War .

Ankachutjan Hraparak was originally called Lenin Square during the Soviet era. By the earthquake in Spitak in 1988 he suffered serious damage. With independence from Armenia in 1991, it was renamed.

The square is dominated by a large park with the statue of the Armenian girl lifting a cross and erected as a memorial to the victims of the 1988 earthquake.
