Independence Memorial Hall
Independence Memorial Hall (also Independence Commemoration Hall , Sinhalese නිදහස් අනුස්මරණ ශාලාව , Tamil சுதந்திர சதுக்கம் , கொழும்பு ) is a national monument in Sri Lanka to commemorate Sri Lanka's independence from British rule and the establishment of a Ceylon-elected parliament on February 4, 1948. It is located in Independence Square (formerly: Torrington Square ) in Cinnamon Gardens , Colombo . The Independence Memorial Museum is also located in the basement .
The monument was built on the site of the formal ceremony that marked the beginning of self-government. There the first parliament of Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester was convened on February 4, 1948.
At the entrance to the monument is the statue of the First Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Don Stephen Senanayake , the "Father of the Nation". Most of the annual Independence Day celebrations were held there. In addition to its function as a memorial, the building also served as the ceremonial assembly hall for the Senate of Ceylon and the House of Representatives of Ceylon until Parliament took its seat in the new Parliament complex. It currently also serves as a venue for religious ceremonies.
architecture
The building was designed by a group of eight distinguished architects led by Tom Neville Wynne-Jones CBE . The group included FH Billimoria , Shirley de Alwis , Oliver Weerasinghe , Homi Billimoria , Justin Samarasekera and MB Morina . The building's blueprint is based on that of Magul Maduwa , the royal audience hall of the Kingdom of Kandy , the island's last indigenous kingdom, where the Kandy Convention (උඩරට ගිවිසුම Udarata Giwisuma) was signed on March 10, 1815 between the British and the clan heads of Kandy ( Radalas ), which abolished the Kingdom of Kandy. Construction lasted from 1949 to 1953. The building has an area of 929 m² (10,000 sq ft).
