Blue Rose

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Blue roses, like this one, could previously only be made with colored white roses.

The blue rose is a symbol of fulfilled love in Japan and is often given away at weddings. However, it is impossible to grow a blue rose conventionally, since the rose family lacks a metabolic pathway for this. It is a genetically modified organism. This rose variety has the brand name 'Applause', which was bred by the Australian flower breeding company Florigene , a subsidiary of the Japanese mixed and biotechnology company Suntory , over 20 years of development. The genes for the red and orange pigments were switched off by means of gene silencing . A new metabolic pathway and the blue pigment from an iris were implanted from the pansy .
