A glare protection fence is part of the street equipment and serves to reduce or prevent glare from oncoming vehicles in traffic. Glare can in some cases severely restrict the driver's field of vision and thus endanger road users. For this reason, the first attempts with anti-glare fences were made as early as the 1960s.

Anti-glare fences are usually made of plastic slats that are between 0.60 m and 1.20 m in height, depending on requirements. They are usually installed at short intervals on crash barriers or concrete protective walls .

For reasons of cost, anti-glare fences are not used across the board, but only in places where the risk of glare is particularly high, such as through asymmetrical low beam when there is oncoming traffic to the right of the lane. Typical applications are:

  • Median between directional lanes
  • Roadways running in parallel, such as at motorway junctions and construction sites
  • Parallel rail / roadway guidance
  • Unfavorable terrain
  • Bridge structures
  • Strongly dazzling light sources next to the road
