Blinking cartilage kink

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The blinking cartilage kink (syn. Blinking cartilage version ) is an outward kinking of the blinking cartilage ( cartilago palpebrae III ) in the nictitating membrane . The disease occurs mainly in young large breed domestic dogs , rarely also in cats. The cause is probably a disproportion in the growth of the lid and eye-side portions of the blink cartilage.

The blinking cartilage version shows itself in a turning of the free edge of the nictitating membrane outwards. In addition, conjunctivitis usually occurs with discharge from the eye. In the differential diagnosis, a herniation of the nictitating membrane of another cause, a nictitating membrane herniation and tumors of the nictitating membrane are to be excluded. The therapy is carried out surgically, in which usually only the overturned cartilage part is resected .
