Blue Mountain Arts is a book and greeting card publisher based in Boulder , Colorado.

history

Blue Mountain Arts was founded in 1971 by the poet Susan Polis Schutz and the physicist / illustrator Stephen Schutz (the parents of the politician Jared Polis ). The first product was a screen-printed poster with the text: Come Into the Mountains, Dear Friend. in an edition of 12 copies, which were sold through a local bookstore. Illustrated books followed. In 1974, the founder's mother was hired as the first female sales manager. In 1980 the publishing house had 100 employees and 200 salespeople. In 1996 the website BlueMountain.com was launched, which offers digital versions of the greeting cards. In October 1999, Jared Polis' site was sold to Excite @ Home for $ 780 million. Two years later, the site was sold to American Greetings for just $ 35 million (<5% of the purchase price) .
