The Oper im Berg Festival Salzburg is an opera festival that was founded in Salzburg in 2008 . The venues for the annual festival are the caverns 1595 in Mönchsberg. Chamber singer Grace Bumbry has been the patron of the festival since 2010 .

History and reception

The Oper im Berg Festival was founded in 2008 by opera singer Ingo Kolonerics as a homage to the tenor legend Luciano Pavarotti in Salzburg. From the discovery of numerous up-and-coming stars ( Grandi Voci Competition ), who are now active at many important opera stages, it has increasingly developed into an institution for authentically presented opera productions and has been very popular with both audiences and established critics from the outset. The majority of the performances take place in the historical ambience of the caverns built by Archbishop Wolf Dietrich in 1595 in Mönchsberg.

The festival also gives regular guest performances, including at the Josefsburg in Kufstein, Wilhelminenberg Castle in Vienna, Amerang Castle near Munich, in the Maximilianeum , and in the Great Festival Hall in Salzburg.

True to the original, but with a new perspective and unusual proximity, works by Mozart, Puccini, Verdi and Rossini were performed. The first performance of the work Der Sonnenkreis took place in 2009 under the direction of Barbara Bonney , with music by Jeppe Nörgaard Jacobsen and libretto by Ingo Kolonerics. On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of Giuseppe Verdi's birthday, chamber singer Grace Bumbry appeared at a major Italian opera gala at the festival, which was also attended by Ruggero Raimondi and Patricia Wise , among others .

The artistic director Ingo Kolonerics (bass) studied singing in Salzburg, Vienna and Bologna, among others with Grace Bumbry, Gianni Raimondi and Bonaldo Giaiotti . He made his debut at the Wexford Opera Festival at the age of 22 as King Philip II, and sang at the Bayreuth Festival under Giuseppe Sinopoli ; Various engagements have taken him to many European stages as Sarastro, Osmin, Komtur, Sparafucil, Basilio and Ramfis.

Individual evidence

  1. "From more than 100 applicants from Italy, France, USA, Japan, Korea, Russia etc., the best 15 singers will be selected by an international jury. This competition took place for the first time in 2010. It was launched to attract young singers ... to give agents, conductors and organizers the opportunity to present themselves. Ingo Kolonerics, artistic director, singer and jury chairman pays special attention to a jury free of any influence ... The singing performances were consistently great! " Grandi Voci 28.7 DER NEUE MERKER 8/2012 - Reviews of the Vienna State Opera , p. 32.
  2. "The casting of the roles is consistently successful: Marco Antonio Lozano is the seedy Duke. With a confident, winning voice full of charisma, but also with lyricism ... he impresses the audience. His top notes are sensational. Rigoletto is Nejat Isik Belen . He has a dramatic, powerful and splendid voice and gives the fool an acting profile. Arianna Ballotta's Gilda, a rare soprano spinto shows the many facets of the role, dazzling coloratura, but also dramatic outbursts that many singers miss, seem to succeed spontaneously . Your performance touched us deeply. Is there greater praise? Krzysztof Borysiewicz was an uncanny, sovereign Sparafucile. Great voice, great expression! The audience was entranced. Standing ovations.
