Bonaldo Giaiotti
Bonaldo Giaiotti (born December 25, 1932 in Ziracco, a fraction of Remanzacco near Udine ; † June 12, 2018 in Milan ) was an Italian opera singer ( bass ).
Life
Bonaldo Giaiotti studied singing in Udine and then in Milan with Bruno Carmassi and Alfredo Strano and made his debut in 1958 as Colline in Puccini's La Bohème at the Teatro Nuovo in Milan. After further successful appearances at various opera houses in Italy, he appeared for the first time in the USA in Cincinnati in 1959 as Basilio in The Barber of Seville . On October 12, 1960 he made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York as Raimondo in Lucia di Lammermoor with Joan Sutherland in the title role; The conductor was Silvio Varviso . He remained connected to the house for 25 years and sang around 30 roles in more than 300 performances. The focus was on the Italian opera repertoire, including Ramfis in Aida , Timur in Turandot , Padre Guardiano in La forza del destino , Phillip II in Don Carlos , Ferrando in Il trovatore , Count Walter in Luisa Miller , Zaccaria in Nabucco , Giorgio in I puritani , Alvise in La Gioconda , but also King Heinrich in Lohengrin
From 1963 to 2001 he appeared regularly in the Arena di Verona , where he also interpreted roles in early Verdi operas such as Attila (1985). Guest appearances have taken him to the Lyric Opera of Chicago , the Opéra Garnier in Paris, the Vienna State Opera , the Teatro Real in Madrid, the Zurich Opera House , the Royal Opera House in London, the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Hamburg State Opera or the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. However, he did not make his debut at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan until 1986 as Count Rodolfo in La sonnambula . In addition to roles in Italian, he also took on other roles, such as the high priest in Karl Goldmark's Die Königin von Saba (1991 at the Teatro Regio in Turin), Cléomer in Jules Massenet's Esclarmonde (1993 at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo), and Cardinal Johannes Brogni in Jacques Fromental Halévy's La Juive or Zacharie in Giacomo Meyerbeer's Le prophète .
With his powerful voice, he was one of the leading bass players of his generation, who was also a member of the jury for singing competitions and a teacher. A fall in his Milan apartment in early June led to deterioration in his health and ultimately to death.
