Jean-Luc Barbier

Jean-Luc Barbier (* 1951 ) is a Swiss jazz musician ( alto saxophone , flute , piano , composition ).

From 1958 Barbier received saxophone lessons from René Barbier, soloist of the Harmonie Nautique de Genève, with whom he attended concerts with the Orchester de la Suisse Romande at an early age . From 1960 he was a member of the Geneva Cadets and was taught the saxophone by Mr. Zahler. In 1968 he became a member of the Cadets de Genève saxophone quartet. In 1969 he took part in the Zurich Jazz Festival with Louis Vaney 's Big Band. From 1968 to 1971 he studied piano and flute at the Conservatoire populaire de Genève. He also received composition lessons from Luc Hoffmann, clarinetist and arranger of the jazz orchestra of Radio Suisse Romande (RSR). During his studies he founded the Ensemble Contrechamps , which interprets new music.

From 1972 to 1974 he attended the Swiss Jazz School in Bern. He then studied with the Geneva pianists and composers François Mozer and Michel Bastet. He also completed workshops and master classes with Clifford Thornton , Ancher Grøn , Pierre-Yves Artaud and Enrico Rava .

In 1971 Barbier founded his first jazz trio, the Trio Gentofte. In 1972 he co-founded the Association pour l'encouragement de la musique improvisée in Geneva. Between 1973 and 1975 he was a saxophonist in the jazz rock band Le Cornet à Dés . In 1975 he took part in the Montreux Jazz Festival with a quartet founded with the pianist François Lindemann ; the Jean-Luc Barbier - François Lindemann Quartet released the album CM4 , which was followed by another album in 1977. He also had a quartet with the guitarist George Barcos .

From 1976 to 1978, Barbier presented the weekly program Jazz d'aujourd'hui on Swiss radio. In 1978 and 1979 he developed a saxophone technique to play quarter tones; fingerings for three full octaves were created. In 1983 the Geneva composer Jean-René Baumgartner composed a work for solo saxophone ( Aldébaran - Grand lancy ) especially for him .

In 1982 Barbier founded a new jazz quartet with the pianist Christoph Baumann , Hämi Hämmerli and Guido Parini (drums), which performed in France, Switzerland and Spain, published the albums Donostia and Dans la Ville Blanche and lasted until 1986. In 1982 he played in Germany with the Grubenklang Orchester led by Georg Graewe and with the group of pianist John Fischer , who in the following year produced Barbier's album Tokonoma for saxophone solo in New York .

Barbier toured with the band von Nenê and was involved in the production of the album Talisman (1984) in honor of the composer François Mozer with Michel Perez , Daniel Goyone , Michel Benita and Daniel Humair . In 1986 he played at the Jazz Yatra Festival in Bombai with his quartet, to which Daniel Goyone belonged.

In 1975 he organized the first Jazz-Théâtre et Cinéma festival in Meinier (Geneva) with the help of François Roulet, founder of the Center d'Animation Cinématographique (CAC) and the Cinémathèque d'Alger.
