Cristina Deutekom (born August 28, 1931 in Amsterdam as Stientje Engel ; † August 7, 2014 ibid) was a Dutch opera , oratorio and concert singer ( dramatic coloratura soprano ). In Venice it was known as the Dutch nightingale ("Usignolo olandese").

Life

After a few smaller roles, she had her breakthrough in 1963 when she sang the role of Queen of the Night in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Die Zauberflöte . She then sang this role in all major European opera houses, as well as at the Metropolitan Opera in 1968.

She opened the season at the Met in 1974 as Elena in Verdi's I vespri sicilani alongside tenor Plácido Domingo .

In addition to the Queen of the Night , her Mozart roles included Donna Anna ( Don Giovanni ) , Fiordiligi ( Così fan tutte ) and Vitellia ( La clemenza di Tito ) . Her bel canto roles included Gioachino Rossini ( Armida ) , Vincenzo Bellini ( Norma , I puritani ) and Gaetano Donizetti ( Lucia di Lammermoor ) . She sang the dramatic Verdi roles such as Abigaille in Nabucco , Lady Macbeth , Leonora in Il trovatore , Amelia in Un ballo in maschera , Hélene in Les vêpres siciliennes as well as the recordings of Giselda in I Lombardi and Odabella in Attila . She also sang the title role in Puccini's Turandot .

She sang with all of the leading tenors of her time: Franco Corelli , Luciano Pavarotti , Plácido Domingo , Josep Carreras , Alfredo Kraus , Carlo Bergonzi , Peter Schreier and Nicolai Gedda .

She retired on December 31, 1986 after struggling with heart problems during a performance in Bilbao. After her active career, she gave international master classes . In 2001 she was a visiting lecturer at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. After a stroke in 2004, she withdrew from the public eye.
