Nino Sanzogno

Nino Sanzogno (born April 13, 1911 Venice , † May 4, 1983 in Milan ) was an Italian conductor and composer .

Life and work

Sanzogno studied violin and piano at the Liceo Musicale in Venice and then conducting in Vienna with Hermann Scherchen . He began his professional career with the “Gruppo Strumentale”, which he led on stages throughout Italy and Europe on their tour. He was then appointed head of the Teatro La Fenice in Venice in 1937 and a little later that of the Rai Symphony Orchestra in Milan . He worked in the Teatro alla Scala from 1939 .

Sanzogno initially specialized in contemporary music and initiated numerous premieres at La Scala in Milan , including David by Darius Milhaud , the Dialogues des Carmélites by Francis Poulenc , Lady Macbeth of Mzensk by Dmitri Dmitrijewitsch Shostakowitsch , Lulu by Alban Berg , A Midsummer Night's Dream by Benjamin Britten , while abroad, especially in England, he played mainly works by Italian composers such as Gian Francesco Malipiero , Luigi Dallapiccola and Ildebrando Pizzetti .

But he also opened Piccola Scala in 1955 with standard classical works and has conducted works of the eighteenth century on numerous occasions, including composers such as Piccinni , Paisiello and Cimarosa . With such works he also appeared at the Edinburgh Festival in 1957 .

He also left behind some compositions, including two symphonic poems: I quattro del'Apocalisse Cavalieri (1930) and Vanitas (1931), as well as concerts for various instruments.
