Boarding pass

A boarding pass serves as proof of the passenger's authorization to board the aircraft waiting for the flight booked ( boarding ) for the respective airline at the gate . The boarding pass is therefore comparable to a ticket.

After identification of the passenger as a holder of a transport authorization for a particular flight of his based ticket data received from the airline his personal boarding pass him after passing through the security checkpoints (hand baggage inspection and body search ) for boarding in the provided aircraft ( boarding right). The issuing of a boarding pass is therefore a necessary part and completion of the check-in process. The identification and the subsequent issue of the boarding pass can, depending on the airline, take place at the check-in counter or by the passenger himself at the check-in machine or via the Internet (online check-in). Passengers who want to take their hand luggage on the booked flight in addition to their hand luggage (cabin luggage) must hand in this luggage in good time at the check-in counter of the airline or its subcontractor, regardless of the boarding pass.

The boarding pass usually contains the following information:

The barcode ( barcode ) printed on a boarding pass contains similar and other data, e.g. about a frequent flyer account .

Unless already given separately as a " baggage tag " , the passenger receives information about his or her check in the form of a sticker on the passenger section of the boarding pass (tear off of the boarding pass perforated for this purpose as a receipt for his entry authorization), possibly with an additional handwritten note -in the counter checked baggage (not to his hand baggage, which can be brought on board by the passenger).

During the access control at the gate, where the passenger is often re-identified using their identity card or passport and the boarding pass, the control section of their boarding pass is removed from the passenger. This is also used to check whether all people checked in at the check-in counter actually take the flight. The evaluation is carried out automatically by a small device that electronically maintains the passenger list and issues the boarding pass section at the back, or by staff.

In connection with an electronic ticket (e.g. ETIX from Lufthansa ), many airlines offer the option of checking in online or using a mobile phone, smartphone or similar device and then printing out the boarding pass at home on a PC or using it on a mobile phone, smartphone or other device load. This boarding pass contains a 2d code ( Aztec code ) that is scanned when boarding. In this case, you can also organize your boarding pass at check-in machines, some of which are also available with baggage claim. In many large airports there is quick boarding, in which the passenger independently scans the boarding pass with the barcode and thus gains access to the aircraft. Since with this method no airport staff can draw attention to the fact that the seat should have changed, the passenger may receive an automatic printout that draws his attention to the new seat.

In the case of domestic flights or flights within the Schengen area , identification based on the identity card or passport can be completely omitted, but is usually still carried out for security reasons.
