Bob Mumford

Bernard (Bob) C. Mumford Jr. (* 1930 in Steubenville ) is a formative American clergyman of the Pentecostal movement .

Life

Mumford was the third of a total of eight children, two of his brothers died in childhood, so that he grew up with five sisters. At the age of twelve, he had a conversion experience during a service in Roanoke that he attended with his older sister. At the age of 19, Mumford entered the US Navy as a medical officer. While on home leave, he attended a service of the Assemblies of God in Atlantic City, which is believed to be the catalyst for spiritual renewal. Mumford attended Valley Forge Christian College, later the Episcopal Seminary, and finally graduated in 1964 with a Master of Divinity . After graduating, Mumford worked in various churches as a pastor, later as dean and professor at the Elim Bible Institute . After attending a Pentecostal conference in Fort Lauderdale, he founded the Holy Spirit Teaching Mission , which was later renamed Church Growth Ministries (CGM), the driving organization of the so-called Shepherding Movement . Mumford was also the editor of a Pentecostal magazine called New Wine . In 1986 Mumford left CGM and Fort Lauderdale to form a new organization in San Rafael called Lifechangers . He later distanced himself from CGM and apologized to the people who suffered injuries caused by the concept of shepherding from CGM .
