Bob Ong

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bob Ong (* allegedly August 1972 in Pasay City , Philippines ), also known under the name Roberto Ong , is the pseudonym of one of the most famous contemporary Filipino authors. He uses everyday Tagalog to humorously describe and analyze everyday situations in the Philippines. The author does not give his real name.

Website bobongpinoy.com

Ong became famous for his now discontinued homepage bobongpinoy.com , which he had put on the Internet as a hobby alongside his work as a teacher. Bobo is Tagalog for stupid and Pinoy is the demonym for (Malay) citizens of the Philippines; thus "Bobong Pinoy" means "Stupid Filipinos" . Ong says that while his employer was impressed with the website, he may have lost his job if it had been found out that he was the author. He later decided to keep his pseudonym Bob Ong when one of the readers wrote to him by that name. In 1998 the homepage was awarded the People's Choice Philippine Web Award , but was removed from the Internet shortly after the impeachment process and the subsequent revolution against the then Philippine President José Marcelo Ejército in 2001.

Guesswork about identity

Although it is often said that the Filipino author Charlson Ong was behind the pseudonym Bob Ong, Bob Ong himself says in his work "Stainless Longanisa" that his actual last name is not Ong (王), but his stage name is only in his name Go back home. Other suspicions are that the Filipino poet Paolo Manalo was behind the code name, but this has also been denied.
