Soil disinfection

In the soil fumigation (soil disinfection) are pests or pathogens are killed in the upper soil layer.

Soil disinfection is a plant protection measure that mainly takes place in horticulture , tree nurseries or plant nurseries . It can take place physically through steaming (floor disinfection) with superheated steam or flaming or chemically through the use of biocides .

A common application is the use of nematicides to control roundworms in potting soil and in sugar beet cultivation .

The term soil decontamination is also used when it comes to removing toxins (e.g. heavy metals ) or radioactivity (see: decontamination ) from the soil.
