A bolt is a projectile that is fired with a crossbow . Bolts are usually significantly shorter than arrows and are less feathered in today's sports crossbows. Therefore their trajectory is less stable and the effective range of a crossbow is less than that of a longbow, for example . Because of the controllable high pulling weights made possible by an extension mechanism, bolts fly faster than arrows and they are heavier and cause more damage with the higher kinetic energy . For this reason, they were mainly used as projectiles against opponents in plate armor in the Middle Ages .

When shooting with a sports crossbow, shooting is done at a distance of 10 m. As a target used as when shooting with an air rifle , a normal target . The target holder has a lead core in the middle, over which the target is placed. The bolt leaves an impact hole on the disk, just like air rifle ammunition (approx. 4.5 mm diameter).

Others

Some other bullets may also be referred to as bolts . For example, one type of ammunition from an electric shotgun is called a bolt, and that from an electroshock is sometimes called “lightning bolts”.

In the Fantasy - Literature and Far Eastern martial arts , there are also throwing bolts . These are then bolts that are thrown by hand at a target.
