Bomilkar (general)
Bomilkar ( Punic Bodmelqart or Bdmlqrt "in the hand of Melkart "; † 108 BC in Numidia ) was a general and confidante of the Numidian king Jugurtha at the end of the 2nd century BC. Chr.
In 110 BC At the instigation of Jugurtha , Bomilkar in Rome carried out an assassination attempt on the Numid Massiva , which laid claim to the Numidian throne. He had recruited criminals for this purpose, who killed Massiva as ordered. One involved could be hit and caught in the act. In front of the consul Spurius Postumius Albinus , he named the general as his commissioner and instigator in a confession. Bomilkar was charged but remained at large after holding 50 Numidian citizens hostage. During the trial he fled back to Numidia on Jugurtha's orders.
In the war against the Romans that broke out again , Bomilkar served as a general and commanded 108 BC. In the battle of Muthul the war elephants and part of the foot troops. The Roman general Quintus Caecilius Metellus Numidicus , who was victorious in this battle, tried to move Bomilkar to betrayal. Jugurtha was persuaded by Bomilkar to negotiate peace, but soon resumed the war. Bomilkar planned an attack on Jugurtha, but it was discovered; he and his co-conspirators were executed.
