Bongah-Tarjomeh va Nashr-e Ketabe (Public Law Agency for Translation and Publication of Books) was a non-profit institution under public law of Iran promoting the translation and publication of works of world literature , scientific works and works on Iran into Persian Language .

history

The translation of foreign-language books into the Persian language was left to the initiative of individual authors at the beginning of the 20th century. Those translated works that they personally considered important. A systematic selection and translation of the works of world literature and important scientific textbooks did not exist in Iran. In order to remedy this problematic situation for the cultural and social development of Iran, the Bongah-e Tarjomeh va Nashr-e Ketab was founded by a decree by Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi . In later years the institution was expanded and expanded by Schahbanu Farah Pahlavi .

The translation of world literature into Farsi was intended to give broad sections of the population access to world literature. The aim was to familiarize the Iranian population with an interest in literature with the main currents of world literature and to enrich the Persian language through the creation of new terms and expressions.

The systematic translation of specialist standard works should primarily serve basic, advanced and advanced training. By translating books by outstanding philosophers and sociologists, schools of thought and theories about social development unknown in Iran should be made known beyond the specialist community. From the establishment of the institute to the Islamic Revolution in 1978, over 1,000 works were translated and published.

The establishment also sponsored scientific institutes and university institutes that wanted to have foreign-language specialist literature translated and published. Translations of Persian-language publications into foreign languages ​​were also funded.

The " Persian Heritage Series " in English was published in cooperation with UNESCO . Another series that was developed in collaboration with UNESCO was the French-language series "Collection des Oeuvres Representatives" .

Directors

The founding directors in 1952 were: Ehsan Yarshater , Asadollah Alam and Seyyed Hassan Taqizadeh .

From 1958 Ehsan Yarshater became managing director. Other directors were Abdul Hossein Zarinkub , Iradsch Afshār , Jafar Shoar and Hasan Zughi . After Asadollah Alam left, Jafar Sharif-Emami was admitted to the board of directors.

Current activity

After the Islamic Revolution , the Bongah-e Tarjomeh va Nashr-e Ketab and the Bonyad-e Farhang-e Iran were merged with other institutions active in the field of literature and the range of tasks was modified. Special emphasis today is placed on the translation of “Islamic Works” and the establishment of political collections. The libraries of Bongard and Anjoman-e Ketab-e Iran (Book Society Iran) were merged.
