Iradsch Afshār (or Iraj Afshar , listen ? / I PersianAudio file / audio sample ایرج افشار Iradsch Afshār , DMG Īraǧ Afšār ; * October 8, 1925 in Tehran ; † March 9, 2011 in Tehran) was a lawyer, historian, library scholar and Iranist.

Life

Iradsch Afshar was born on October 8, 1925 as the son of Mahmud Afshar and his wife Nosrat Barazandeh in Tehran. He first attended the Zoroastrian -oriented Shapur high school and then later the Firuz-Bahram high school in Tajrish in Tehran. From 1945 to 1949 he studied law at the University of Tehran. After completing his studies, Iradsch Afshar first worked as a teacher at Sharif and later at Gharib high school. From 1952 he published the magazine Farhang-e Irānzamin together with Mohammad-Taqi Danesh-Pajouh, Manoucher Sotoudeh, Mostafa Mogharrabi, Abbas Zaryab Khoye . From 1954 he became editor-in-chief of Sokhan magazine , published by Parwiz Natel Chanlari .

In 1954 Afshar became director of Bongah-e Tarjomeh va Nashr-e Ketab and head of the magazine Ketābhāy-e māh (Book of the Month) . After training in library science as part of a UNESCO program, Afshar founded the Bāshgāh-e ketāb (book club ), which was later renamed Anjoman-e ketāb (book society) . From 1958 Afschar taught library science at the University of Tehran . At the same time he became editor-in-chief of the magazine Rāhnamāy-e ketā , which was published by Ehsan Yarshater . In 1961 he founded the magazine Nashriyeh noskhehāy-e khatti (magazine for manuscripts) together with Mohammad-Taqi Danesh-Pajouh .

In 1962, Iradsch Afshar took over the management of the Iranian national library for a short time, but returned to the University of Tehran to take over the management of the Institute for Bibliographic Research and Indexing. In 1963 he went to Harvard University for a year to reorganize the formal and content-related cataloging of Persian books.

From 1965 Afshar resumed teaching at the University of Tehran and was also director of the university's central library. He also became editor of the journal Ketābdāri (publications of the University of Tehran) . From 1969 on he held a professorship in history at the University of Tehran, which he held until 1979.

After the Islamic Revolution, Iradsch Afshar left the University of Tehran and reissued the magazine Ayandeh (Future) , founded by his father Mahmud Afshar in 1926 but discontinued in 1929 . The magazine was published until 1994. One year after the death of his father, Irad Afschar founded the Dr. Mahmoud Afhsar Foundation and gave the journal Nāmvāreh-e Dr. Mahmoud Afshar , later renamed Pajouhesh-hāye Irāni (Journal of Iranian Studies) out.

In 1989 he taught for a year at the University of Bern . In 1998, Iraj Afhsar went to the Austrian National Library to take over the cataloging and indexing of Persian manuscripts. From 2001 he published the magazine Daftar-e tārikh (Small Manuscripts) .

Iradch Afshar died on March 9, 2011 in Tehran. He was married to Shayesteh Afsharieh since 1945. The marriage resulted in four sons.
