Bongani Mayosi

Bongani Mawethu Mayosi (born January 28, 1967 in Mthatha , † July 27, 2018 in Cape Town ) was a South African medic .

Mayosi was involved in over 300 publications, which were cited 27,000 times (as of 2018). He is believed to have discovered a gene that predisposes to arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVCM), a common cause of heart attacks in young people. He was also the first black dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Cape Town and chaired a supervisory body of the South African Medical Association.

Mayosi died by suicide .

Awards

In 2009 Mayosi was awarded the Order of Mapungubwe in silver.
