The Booker T. Washington National Monument is a former tobacco farm near the town of Hardy ( Franklin County ) in the State of Virginia . In 1856 the educator and black lawyer Booker T. Washington was born as a slave on her . On the occasion of his 100th birthday, the area was declared a national monument type memorial in 1956 .
