The sound assistant (also angler , or English : Boom Operater, Boomman ) is a member of a film crew .

It is the task of the sound assistant to help the sound engineer to record a sound signal that is as direct as possible . This is often done with a microphone attached to a boom that is held as close as possible to an actor's mouth . However, neither the boom nor its shadow should be visible in the image section. Also in glare and reflections should not see the boom pole.

There is no state training to become a sound assistant. Career entry can usually be found through an internship or through no-budget films. There are training courses / courses to become a sound assistant at private schools, but the content of the course usually goes far beyond mere fishing.
