Boatswain is the name of a dog; it belongs to the captain Putt Bräsing . The children Uwe , Katrinchen and Jochen came to play with the dog on the shore of a bay in winter. Jochen and boatswain play on one of the ice floes on the bank . When it breaks, Jochen saves himself by jumping to the bank, but the boatman drifts away with the clod. While Jochen is running away and Katrinchen, who has been sent for help, does not come back, Uwe drives a boatman out on the Baltic Sea in a rowing boat . However, he does not manage to reach the dog on the floe. Skipper Feodor on board the ship Aunt Jelena first discovers the ice floe, then the boat and sends the two sailors Mischa and Kolja out in a dinghy. First the boy and then the boatswain are rescued.
