history

Saga time

Borg á Mýrum was the court of Skallagrímur Kveldúlfsson , son of Kveldúlfur, who fled Norway in the 9th century after a dispute with the Norwegian king . On the voyage, however, Kveldúlfur became seriously ill and ordered his son to throw his coffin overboard after his death, and wherever he came ashore, Skallagrímur Kveldúlfsson should set up his court. His son Egill Skallagrímsson later lived on the Borg á Mýrum farm. In addition, the Egils saga mostly takes place in Borg á Mýrum.

Christianization

Since the Christianization of Iceland around 1000 AD, there has always been a church in Borg á Mýrum. The current church was built in 1880 and is a rarity due to its orientation in the north-south direction - a contradiction to the other traditional churches in Iceland .

Sonatorrek

In front of the church is the monument Sonatorrek by Ásmundur Sveinsson . It depicts Egill Skallagrímsson holding his dead son Böðvar in his arms. The name Sonatorrek (Mourning for the Sons) comes from the poem of the same name which Egill Skallagrímsson wrote for his two deceased sons, Gunnar and Böðvar.
