Boston Cream Pie

Boston Cream Pie is a cake that is particularly popular in Massachusetts , USA .

According to tradition, the invention goes back to the French chef de cuisine of the Parker House Hotel (opened in 1855), who introduced a variant of the usual pudding / cake layers in which the pudding was replaced by a lighter filling made of vanilla cream or Bavarian cream . The name cream pie also comes from this time when this type of cream was only used to underlay the fruit in cakes. The pie consists of two layers of cake dough with a filling and is finally covered with a chocolate coating, more rarely also covered with sugar icing and decorated with cocktail cherries .

The pastry is very popular in Massachusetts, there is also a round version, the Boston Cream Donut, which is similar to the Berlin pancake , but has a Boston cream filling and is coated with a chocolate coating, similar to the Boston Cream Pie. Both pastries, Boston Cream Pie and Boston Cream Donut, are listed as national pastries by the state of Massachusetts.
