Bota (drinking bag)

Drinking bag Bota

As Bota de vino [ βota ðe βino ] or short Bota is called in Spain a water bladder made of leather. The traditionally manufactured bag contains a sealing coating made of pitch inside and is therefore only suitable for use with wine ; more modern versions are equipped with a rubber layer and can therefore also be filled with other beverages.

In Spain, the drinking bag is the classic vessel that agricultural workers and farmers took with them to work in the fields. Nowadays the leather bag can often be found as a colorfully printed tourist souvenir , but Spaniards use the classic bota in the leisure sector. The leather pouch is originally made entirely by hand , the corresponding job title is called botero in Spanish .

Since the pitch layer of the leather bag is quite sensitive, the bag should be stored lying flat without air inclusion. An emptied bota can be warmed up for use and then inflated.
