Bielefeld Botanical Garden
The Bielefeld Botanical Garden is located on the southern slope of the Kahlenberg, part of the Teutoburg Forest , in the southwest of the East Westphalian city of Bielefeld . It was founded in 1912 as an extension to the Johannisfriedhof , until the extraordinary variety of plants on the site was discovered. In the following years, the first new plants were sown, so that in 1915 the garden already contained 500 different species.
During the Second World War , the one hectare area was used as arable land and, as a result, most of the plants were destroyed. Today there are around 3000 different types of plants in the garden. A special feature is the extensive rhododendron and azalea collection, as well as the collection of ferns along the fern stairs. The fern department is still young and was realized as a Fern Stair project in 2007 by the Friends of the Botanical Garden.
In the center of the complex is a Westphalian farmhouse built in 1823. The characteristic farmhouse is in the logo of the non-profit association Friends of the Botanical Garden Bielefeld e. V. pictured. The Association for the Promotion of the Botanical Garden initiates projects to further develop and preserve the Bielefeld Botanical Garden.
The garden is divided into different natural habitats:
- Rock garden
- Alpinum
- Medicinal and spice garden
- Heather garden
- Beech forest flora
- Pond system
- rose Garden
- Fern staircase
Another special feature of the Bielefeld Botanical Garden is the geological clock, which shows the visitor the sequence and duration of the geological ages .
The park is open all year round and admission is free.
