The Botanical Garden Gera is a 0.7 hectare teaching and show garden in the Thuringian city of Gera , which particularly shows the flora of East Thuringia and is now part of the municipal museum for natural history .

history

The botanical garden goes back to an initiative of the Kommerzienrat Walter Ferber (1830–1895). He donated the part of his extensive garden property to the city of Gera above Nicolaistraße, which was laid out around 1890, on the condition that a teaching garden for botanical lessons at the city schools should be created there. The garden was designed from 1897 onwards by the senior teacher Robert Leube (1866–1938), supported by a gardener. Leube, who ran the botanical garden until 1909, divided the complex into communities such as meadow , heather , brook banks , deciduous and coniferous forest , established a small tree nursery and kept snakes and amphibians in a small terrarium. Leube's successors after 1909 put the plants in the garden together according to the systematic criteria, taking into account the limited space available . From 1947 to 1951 the garden was fundamentally redesigned; In addition, the park was attached to the newly founded natural history museum.

Todays use

The tower house, located in the upper part of the botanical garden and built in 1864, was renovated from 1990 to 1995 and serves as a teaching building for the “Green School” of the Museum of Natural History. The plant communities shown today are deciduous forest , semi-arid grassland , rock and gravel fields, and marsh and water plants ; there is also a herb garden and a geological teaching wall.

The botanical garden was an accompanying project of the Federal Horticultural Show 2007 .
