The Natural History Museum in Gera is one of four municipal museums in the city. It is located in Schreiber's house on Nicolaiberg in the eastern old town, right next to the Salvator Church .

Building history

The Schreiber House was built between 1686 and 1688 by the Leipzig merchant Gottfried Perner. It was named after the Schreiber family, who lived there from 1716 to 1847. It became known primarily because it was the only residential building in the city to survive the Gera city fire of September 18, 1780. After 1847 it was owned by the city and was used as a court house and school, and finally as a museum from 1947. At first it was an alternative location for the exhibitions of the war-torn city museum , after its re-establishment in the years 1951 to 1956 it was transformed into a natural history museum.

Museum use

As a natural history museum , the museum primarily deals with the living beings and the geology of Gera and the East Thuringia region. The number of visitors was 14,935 in 2006, 17,982 in 2007 and 16,075 in 2008.

The Natural History Museum also includes the " Höhler Nr. 188" below the Schreiber House, in which minerals are exhibited, and the Gera Botanical Garden in Nicolaistrasse.
