The Bourse Toussoun

The Bourse Toussoun is a building in Alexandria . It was built on what was then rue de Rosette 2. The rue de Rosette and the rue de la Gare formed an angle within which several important buildings were located, such as the Théatre Zizinia. The building now houses the Horreya Cultural Center.

history

The building stands on ground steeped in history: in 1886 the remains of a large temple from the time of Ptolemy IV were discovered on the property on which the Bourse Toussoun was built. As early as 1948, a stone block with the Greek inscription Διοσκουρίδου γ τόμοι had been discovered on the site, which at that time belonged to the seat of the Austrian consulate, from which it was initially concluded that the location of the famous library of Alexandria had been discovered. This theory was rejected a little later.

The building, which was built for the Alexandria Exchange Company, housed a branch of the Cook travel agency and the Club Khédivial, which later became Club Mohamed Ali , and was the site of the first cinema screening in Egypt in November 1896.

The old club was founded in 2001 under the direction of Dr. Adel Mokhtar renovated, but apparently little value was placed on the original.
