Bous a la Mar (German: "Bulls into the Sea") is an event that takes place every year as part of the “ Santísima Sangre ” festival in the city of Dénia in Spain ( Alicante province ). “Bous a la mar” has existed since 1926 and was built into the frame of the patronage festivals as a joke .

procedure

The young bulls are driven one by one along the avenue Marqués de Campo into a rectangular bullring , which is specially set up for this event on the harbor quay. However, one side of the arena is not adjacent to the grandstand. It is open to the Mediterranean .

While amateur toreros in swimming shorts in the bullring try to drive the animals towards the docks and often fall into the water themselves, numerous spectators sit in the stands and watch. If an animal holds out for a certain period of time, it is pardoned.

criticism

Animal rights activists protest against the spectacle year after year. Actually the animals are not injured in the arena. However, the excitement and heat cause some animals to have heart attacks . They are also electrocuted before entering the arena.
