The Bowmore Free Church is a church building in Bowmore , the capital of the Scottish Hebridean island of Islay . It is located on the High Street on the southern outskirts. On October 9, 1991, Bowmore Free Church was added to the Scottish List of Monuments in Category C. The building is no longer used as a church today.

description

The building was probably built by Douglas Campbell in 1860 on a former open space on the outskirts in neo-Gothic style from rubble stone. The south facade of the main building, which is erected on a rectangular base, has a rose window . Four and two pointed arch windows are embedded along the east and west sides . All windows are framed by imported ashlar stones, which were also used on the arches in the interior. The building ends with a slate-covered gable roof . The entrance area was set up asymmetrically on the east side of the building. At the southern end there is a one-story extension with a gable roof. The church building is enclosed by a low stone wall. The benches were probably removed in the 1950s and the building was used as a community hall from then on.
