With the help of the roll press , the baker can divide a loaf of dough into 30 rolls and create a round shape so that the rolls can be further shaped by hand.

Older machines only shape the roll blanks round. With more modern machines, the rolls can also be made into an elongated dough shape and at the same time provided with a longitudinal or cross cut in the middle so that they get their typical shape when baking .
